ABIDE Document Community Forum
Dear Luther Community,
In April 2021, we began sharing with the community a document that framed our DEI work, naming it as ABIDE. The document’s authors, Matt Skinner, Lois Malcom, Ken Reynhout, and Mark Tranvik produced what later became known as the ABIDE document and this was shared across our community.
We are now preparing to get the ABIDE document approved as an institutional document.
Several departments have already provided feedback and we want to invite you to our final community-wide feedback session. This will be an on-line gathering via Zoom.
We are hoping to present this to the board at the May board meeting. Once the communication process has been concluded, the original authors of the document will amend it and prepare it for presentation to the board. Our aim, ultimately, is to steer a process that will culminate in the board’s review and approval for use of the ABIDE document as an institutional document.
The final ABIDE session is this Friday, January 13, 2023, from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. (facilitators Dr. Ken Reynhout and Dr. Lois Malcolm.)
The Zoom link will be shared via email.

Message from President Steinke
The writer of Ecclesiastes proclaims: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; …a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
I received word on Saturday morning from our Dean of Students and VP for Inclusion and Belonging, Dr. Leon Rodrigues, that his father died unexpectedly on Saturday.
Leon wrote today and asked that we share the following details: “On Saturday my mother informed me that my father had passed into eternal life. He died peacefully in his sleep which is what I had always prayed for. My father, Rev. Henry Rodrigues was a wonderful man and servant of God. He was 94 years old and for the past 15 years, had serious struggles with dementia. We have many good memories of my father and while our journey currently is a mixture of grief and gratitude, we celebrate that God’s divine purposes were fulfilled in my dad’s life. Our family appreciates the prayers and words of comfort during our time of bereavement.”
Please keep Leon and his wife Sophie as well as their family in your prayers as they commend Henry to God’s eternal loving embrace. When we have funeral details we will share that information. You can write a card or note for him at his seminary address.
Requiescat in Pace
