Financial Counseling with Lutheran Social Service
Luther Seminary partners with Lutheran Social Service (LSS) of Minnesota to offer students and their immediate family members six free sessions of financial counseling per year. Appointments are available via phone, video call, or email. LSS financial counselors are certified and equipped to handle a wide range of topics that will benefit our students like creating a plan for student loan and/or credit card debt, credit reports, home foreclosure, and more. NOTE: Students do not need to be Lutheran or located in the state of Minnesota to take advantage of this service.
- To learn more about your options, visit the LSS/Luther Seminary Financial Choice website.
- To set up a phone appointment with a certified financial counselor, call 800.528.2926 and tell them you are a Luther Seminary student.
- To receive support from a counselor via email, fill out your financial profile and a counselor will get in touch with you. (NOTE: You will get the most specific help by scheduling a phone appointment.)
After meeting with LSS, please forward Grace Pomroy (gpomroy001@luthersem.edu) the certificate you receive and she will send you a $50 Amazon gift card.
Clergy Tax Information Conversation
The goal of this offering is to provide an opportunity for students preparing for ordained ministry to learn more about the intricacies of clergy taxes and how it might apply to their particular situation. NOTE: This is not a tax preparation service.
The Stewardship Leaders Program has relationships with two clergy tax professionals:
- We have a relationship with Rev. Dr. David Cleaver-Bartholomew. David is a pastor and former synod office staffer who is currently working as a CPA and clergy tax professional. He is an excellent resource! The Stewardship Leaders Program will cover the costs of your meeting with him to figure out clergy taxes/housing allowance before first call. If you decide to have him actually do your taxes, you will need to cover those costs. Reach out to Grace Pomroy at gpomroy001@luthersem.edu for David’s contact information.
- We also have a relationship with Clergy Financial Resources that allows you to talk with one of their tax experts at no cost to you. Please use this link to sign up for an appointment with them: Luther Seminary – MDiv and MDivX Students NOTE: It takes a few minutes for their system to load the dates so stick with it.
