The Seminary experience is more than academic training. It is our goal to help students to learn how to care for their own spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being so that they can care for others in the long run. Along with communal spiritual practices, Luther offers $400/year for students to work with either a spiritual director or a licensed counselor.
Criteria for Spiritual Directors
- They have completed training with a reputable organization (150 hours)
- They carry liability insurance
- They are under the care of a Spiritual Director
- They participate in peer supervision and continuing education
Refer to the Emotional Well-Being Guide for a list of pre-approved spiritual directors.
Group Spiritual Direction
If you are interested in Group Spiritual Direction, you may form a group of 3-4 students (either online or in person) and meet with a Spiritual Director (who meets the above criteria) for up to four sessions per academic year.
Reimbursement for Spiritual Direction
Each degree-seeking student may request reimbursement towards payment of a licensed counselor and/or spiritual director for up to $400 per fiscal year (July 1-June 30). To be reimbursed, you must complete the Reimbursement Request form and upload appropriate documentation within the fiscal year. Please put your last name in the PDF file name. Alternatively, you may ask your practitioner to send an invoice for direct payment. Please reach out to the Dean of the Chapel with any questions (sthomason002@luthersem.edu).
