Travel to (and Learn in) Western Turkey in May 2025

Posted on April 25, 2024

Matt Skinner will teach a for-credit travel course next year centered around a trip to Istanbul and the breathtaking excavated ruins of several ancient cities including Ephesus, Pergamum, Sardis, and Alexandria Troas. Next May 19-28, visit and learn from sites associated with the seven churches addressed by the book of Revelation, the ministry of Paul the Apostle, and the episodes from Acts that occur in the province that the Romans called Asia. Discover more about how the New Testament reflects ancient imperial dynamics—dynamics that influenced ancient Christ followers, their interactions with their neighbors, and their efforts to bear witness to Christ. Preliminary information about the trip’s dates, itinerary, and approximate cost is available online. Email Prof. Skinner (mskinner@luthersem.edu) or Jody Nyenhuis (jnyenhuis001@luthersem.edu) to have your name added to a list of people interested in receiving more information before the trip’s registration period opens at the end of July.

Stories of Sacred Belonging – Community Meal and Lunch Discussion Today

Posted on April 24, 2024

Following the chapel sermon on the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8) today—Wednesday, April 24—Cody Sanders will lead us in a discussion over lunch about the multiple ways that “belonging” shows up in the text and in our lives. The event follows chapel on Wednesday and will take place in the main dining room and on Zoom (link in email). Belonging to a faith community promotes multiple forms of health—spiritual, emotional, physical. A recent article in Harvard Public Health even suggests, “Failing to consider religious community in thinking about public health may impede our understanding of the health of populations.” Yet we know that many benefits of religious belonging are unevenly distributed across populations, and belonging is often shaped by our embodiments of human difference. We will explore together how we can attend to practices that cultivate and sustain belonging—to God, to one another, and to the earth. All are invited to join. Lunch will be provided.

Registrar’s Office Pocket Survey Response

Posted on April 23, 2024

The staff in the Office of the Registrar has received the feedback from the most recent pocket survey. We are glad to know that most members of our community find this office to be responsive and respectful to their needs. We take seriously the areas for improvement that were mentioned such as degree audits and accessibility of our forms. In the coming months we will be producing a few educational resources to help students navigate these important processes in the Registrar’s Office. Look for these in the Community Announcements emails and on MyLutherNet. We will also be exploring new ways to be more visible during times when campus has the most activity. As always, please feel free to reach out to either of us for any support our office can offer.
