Each July, Disability Pride Month recognizes the history, achievements, experiences, and contributions of people with disabilities. It is also an opportunity to challenge stereotypes, promote accessibility, and remember that disability is a natural part of human diversity. Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July because the Americans with Disabilities Act, commonly called the ADA, was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits disability discrimination in employment, government programs and services, public accommodations, transportation, and other areas of public life. Congress later broadened the law through the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. The ADA helped establish the important principle that disability rights are civil rights. Disability Pride Month invites all of us to listen to disabled people, examine barriers, and treat accessibility as a shared responsibility throughout the year.
