Joe Squire is an M.A. student at Luther Seminary and was recently elected as the chairperson for the seminary’s International Students Association (ISA). Joe grew up in both Sierra Leone and Botswana and is an ecumenical student (Pentecostal). We asked Joe to tell us more about his experiences as a student here at Luther.

Where did you grow up, and what first got you interested in studying theology?
I had a unique upbringing, having grown up in both Sierra Leone and Botswana. My early experiences in Sierra Leone—serving as an altar boy in the Roman Catholic Church—sparked a deep connection with theology and ministry. By assisting the priests during services, I began to appreciate the richness of our liturgical traditions and the transformative power of faith. This experience bore in me a desire to delve deeper into the study of theology.
What led you to pursuing theological education here at Luther Seminary?
My journey to theological education here began with a deep sense of calling and conviction. As a church administrator and leadership trainer in Botswana, I was increasingly aware of the need for thoughtful, compassionate, and informed leaders who can navigate the complexities of our world while remaining grounded in their faith. I was drawn to Luther Seminary’s rich tradition of theological excellence, commitment to faith, and passion for nurturing leaders who can serve with humility and integrity. The Luther Seminary mission statement resonated deeply with me, transcending mere words to embody the very essence and values of the institution.
What degree program are you in at Luther Seminary, and what are you hoping to do with your seminary education?
I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Leadership and Innovation for Ministry here at Luther Seminary. The program combines theological reflection, leadership development, and innovative thinking. My hope is that, through this program, I will be equipped to be a better leadership trainer in my community and beyond. I am very passionate about empowering others, fostering collaborative relationships, and exploring new ways to engage in ministry.
