Winter Term Rural Immersion Program Opportunity—Partnership With Wartburg Seminary and the South Dakota Synod

Posted on December 20, 2024

There is an opportunity for cross registration for this January term course in 2025 through Wartburg Seminary for a student.  This is the catalog language for Wartburg’s immersion program:

“This 2 credit course [which is two thirds a credit in Luther’s system] in a rural ministry context through Wartburg Seminary. Students will be immersed in the life of a rural ELCA congregation or parish in South Dakota. This experience is a one to one pairing with a called pastor for the January term that will place students into the daily life and worship (Jan. 10-26) of a thriving rural community, with a time of closing reflection with the South Dakota Synod Director for Rural Ministries (Jan. 26-27). Students will receive a $1,000 stipend for travel and expenses. Lodging is provided.”

Students will need access to a vehicle and be able to drive. They will have a solo residence.

This class will be linked to an existing course at Luther RM 4542 – Loving Your Neighbor in Rural Settings. Pr. Joel Pakan from South Dakota and Dr. Mark Yackel Juleen will oversee the work on the South Dakota Immersion which will be two thirds of the course. Pr. Jon Anderson will be the professor of record for the remaining course through Luther. We will use two weeks of the Luther Course RM 4542 to complete the ⅓ credit so Luther students will be able to earn a full credit.

The course would be offered as pass/fail. The Wartburg/South Dakota Team would grade the opening ⅔ and the Luther content will be graded by Pr. Jon Anderson.

Contact Pr. Jon Anderson, Rural Ministry Director at Luther Seminary at janderson008@luthersem.edu if you are interested.
