Wondimu Sonsessa’s PhD Oral Defense
The oral examination for Wondimu Sonessa, Ph.D. candidate, is a public event open to faculty, students, and staff. Join us Tuesday, April 16, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in Gullixson Hall room 103. A note for guests: other than the candidate, only faculty members have speaking privileges. What is a Ph.D. oral defense? The oral defense is the final step for a Ph.D. degree candidate before graduation. The student will have finished all research and is presenting a thesis that is an original contribution to their field of scholarship. A copy of the completed thesis is available prior to the defense for those in the Luther Seminary community: “The Lutheran Tradition and Charismatic Experience: The Case of Ethiopian Immigrant Congregations in North America.”
ABIDE Film Screening: “God Loves Uganda” – Today
Film. 3:30 p.m.
Break. 4:55 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Discussion. 5:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, April 16, join us live in OCC 10 or online for a screening and discussion. “God Loves Uganda” is a documentary film that explores the impact of US Christian missionaries on LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in Uganda. The film focuses on a missionary organization that aims to “save” Africa from the spread of the LGBTQIA2S+ lifestyle. The American missionaries are openly hateful toward LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in Africa and support legislation in Uganda that criminalizes LGBTQIA2S+ people. A Ugandan priest advocates for the humanity and dignity of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals but is ostracized along with his family. Watch the film on your own. Then join the Zoom discussion (link in email) at 5pm. * Viewers should be aware that a portion of the documentary has explicit discussion and analysis of human sexuality.
