On June 17, 2015, the Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Marie Hurd Graham, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, the Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Kibwe Diop Sanders, the Rev. Daniel Lee Simmons, the Rev. Myra Singleton Quarles Thompson, and the honorable state senator and pastor of the church, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney were killed during a Bible study at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
They were murdered by a self-avowed White supremacist who was also a member of the ELCA. We have been called upon to remember, to repent, and to study. Our community joins the prayers and lamentation offered to commemorate the Emanuel Nine.
Our prayers joined the prayers of The ELCA along with episcopal leaders from the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. That service can be found on the ELCA page for the event.
