{"id":291,"date":"2025-08-18T13:13:45","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T13:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/?p=291"},"modified":"2025-08-18T13:13:45","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T13:13:45","slug":"a-healing-sabbath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/2025\/08\/18\/a-healing-sabbath\/","title":{"rendered":"A Healing Sabbath"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Jesus heals a woman in the Gospel reading this week (Luke 13:10-17). He was teaching in the synagogue on a Sabbath. That\u2019s what good religious leaders do, right? Then this crippled woman \u201cappears\u201d while he was talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop and evaluate the situation. Be honest. If you were in the middle of your sermon during a well-planned worship service, knowing that people are expecting to get out on time to get their kids and make it home by game time, and a person in need interrupted the service, what would you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus stopped. He noticed her. He set her free from the spirit that had bound her up for eighteen years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s wonderful!\u201d you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leader of the synagogue didn\u2019t think so. He was indignant and said to her, \u201cThere are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, not on the Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am continually amazed at how good we are at turning God\u2019s Good News upside down. Religious leaders, like me, like to run a tight ship, keep things in proper order, and maintain a sense of control over their world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus loves messing with our tidy little worlds, doesn\u2019t he?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The text that most impacted me this week is the second option of the first reading: Isaiah 58:9b-14. It is helpful to go back a few verses, beginning in verse 6, to get the full impact. Isaiah is critiquing the upside-downness of the religious leaders of his day. They were trying to win God\u2019s favor and deliverance (or control God) through temple rituals, but they were completely missing the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice what Gods wants for the people and from the religious leaders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to loose the bonds of injustice,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to let the oppressed go free,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to share bread with the hungry,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to bring the homeless poor into your house,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to clothe the naked,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to not ignore anyone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to STOP pointing the finger and speaking evil of others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is our checklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, that we may be a people, a nation, religious leaders who care more about healing on the Sabbath than \u201ckeeping the Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2025\/08\/Luke-13_10-17-1024x470.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2025\/08\/Luke-13_10-17-1024x470.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2025\/08\/Luke-13_10-17-300x138.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2025\/08\/Luke-13_10-17-768x353.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2025\/08\/Luke-13_10-17-1536x706.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/inside.luthersem.edu\/deanofthechapel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2025\/08\/Luke-13_10-17.jpeg 1885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jesus heals a woman in the Gospel reading this week (Luke 13:10-17).
