Addiction touches all our lives. From substances to social media, we and our loved ones seem to be increasingly compelled by attachments that get beyond our control. Despite its wide reach and steep personal and social costs, addiction remains a perplexing and hotly contested issue for researchers, pastors, policymakers, and the public at large. What might the ubiquity of addiction, and our numerous attempts to understand it, reveal about our current moment?
