Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary will be offering a Chaplaincy Discernment course May 15-26, 2023 via Zoom.
MIN 580 Military Chaplaincy Discernment
This seminar course examines the unique ministry of military chaplains. It provides students an opportunity to begin or deepen a discernment process regarding military chaplaincy. Course activities and student requirements focus on helping students gain a better understanding of this specialized ministry and their suitability for military chaplaincy. The seminar examines religious identity, principles of chaplaincy practice, and ethics for military service. Topics address the history and practice of military chaplains during war and peacetime in a variety of settings. The course also explores pastoral care for military members, veterans, and family members affected by service.
The instructor is Captain Brian J. Stamm (Virgina Synod), Chaplain Corps, US Navy, who oversees chaplains across US Naval Fleet Forces as well as all Navy chaplaincy activities in North America. Capt. Stamm has served in a wide variety of chaplain positions, including having designed and taught Navy chaplaincy curriculum to chaplains.
