Student Board Members, Word & World
Are you interested in participating in Word & World as a student member of the Editorial Board?
Word & World is the quarterly journal of Theology for Christian Ministry published by the faculty of the seminary. Its work is guided by the staff and an Editorial Board made up of seven members of the Luther faculty and two students. The students are full-voting members of the board. Both student slots are open for next year, starting July 1, 2023.
Membership on the board is voluntary and unsalaried, but students do get the opportunity to participate in the life of a significant theological journal. Duties include regular attendance at board meetings (perhaps two or three per year) and thoughtful contribution to the board’s work, including bringing ideas for issues and authors. All students, in any program, are eligible.
If you would like to be a student board member for 2023-2024 please reply both to Prof. Alan Padgett (Board Chair) and Prof. Mark Granquist (Editor) with a note that spells out your interest in the position, your availability to serve, and your qualifications. Include your year, program, and anticipated graduation date. To be considered, these must be received by Monday, May 1, 2023. Let us know, too, if you have further questions.
NEW (and FREE) Workshop – April 17: Couples and Money: A values-based, shame-free approach to talking about money together
When? Monday evening, April 17, 2023 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. central time
Where? Zoom – Register here
Arguments about money are continually cited as the leading cause of divorce and separation. What you might now know, however, is that couples who talk about money report being happier than those that don’t. The message? Communicating about money in a healthy way deepens couples’ connections and is another form of intimacy. Join us to learn:
- Why talking about money as a couple is so hard.
- Ways to view your partner’s relationship with money with compassion.
- A values-based way to plan out your finances together.
- Each participant will also get a digital worksheet to use and refer back to long after the workshop ends.
About the presenter: Lindsay Bryan-Podvin (she/her) is a biracial financial wellness expert, speaker, and author of the book “The Financial Anxiety Solution.” A practicing social worker since 2012, she uses a shame-free approach to help people get their minds and money in balance by focusing on the intersection of money and mental health using financial therapy.

Calling All Region 1 Students – Let’s Get Together!
We’re excited to gather together Luther students (and interns!) from across ELCA Region 1 (aka Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana). Whether you’re currently located in this region, doing candidacy in this region, interning in this region, or hoping to have a first call in this region, we’d love to have you! And if you’re from another Western State we’re happy to have you, too.
Currently, we’re hoping to host two gatherings: one in-person and one online. We’re hoping to gauge your interest in being a part of these gatherings – you would be welcome to participate in one or both. The goal of these gatherings is to get to know one another better and make connections across the students living in this region. Once we know who is interested, we’ll take a look at dates.
If you’re interested, please take a few minutes to fill out this Google form.
