Did you know that in a basement just over 6 miles away from Luther Seminary, the very first fantasy roleplaying game was played on April 17, 1971?
This first gaming session would be developed into a set of house rules that would eventually be expanded on and published in 1974 as a set of brown booklets called Dungeons & Dragons.
Nathan Lyke is a senior at Luther Sem, and a D&D enthusiast and game-history archivist. Come for a brief history of how this game came to be through historical objects (including a model castle that belonged to the game’s co-creator Dave Arneson), ask questions, and play a “one-shot” session in the style these original players used when the game was merely a loose set of house rules.
No experience necessary, and even seasoned players will likely learn some new historical points of interest about the game! All students, faculty, and staff are welcome.
We’ll be in Gullixson 103 for a light Jimmy John’s dinner and D&D history and then around 6:30 we’ll transition to the library to play the one-shot. See email for Zoom link for history at 6:00 p.m. CST.
