TODAY: ABIDE Document Open Conversation
Dear Luther Community,
In April 2021, we began sharing with the community a document that framed our DEI work, naming it as ABIDE. The document’s authors, Matt Skinner, Lois Malcom, Ken Reynhout, and Mark Tranvik produced what later became known as the ABIDE document and this was shared across our community.
We are now preparing to get the ABIDE document approved as an institutional document.
Several departments have already provided feedback and we want to invite you to community-wide feedback sessions. These will be on-line gatherings via Zoom.
We are hoping to present this to the board at the May board meeting. Once the communication process has been concluded, the original authors of the document will amend it and prepare it for presentation to the board. Our aim, ultimately, is to steer a process that will culminate in the board’s review and approval for use of the ABIDE document as an institutional document.
We have allowed for two dates and you can attend either one (or both). These will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022, from 10 a.m.–11 a.m. (facilitated by Dr. Lois Malcolm and Dr. Leon Rodrigues) and on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 1 p.m.–2 p.m. (facilitators Dr. Ken Reynhout and Dr. Lois Malcolm).
Students: See email for Zoom link.
Contact rdale001@luthersem.edu if you need a copy of the ABIDE document.
Tuesday: Pizza and Study Night
Wrapping up the last of your finals for the semester? Need dinner and some company? Join Pastor Jeni and the chapel staff in the OCC cafe this Tuesday from 5:30–8 p.m. We will be bringing in pizza from Pizza Luce, with vegan options included.
Book Now for Intensives and RFS
With more students coming to campus, and general travel in the area, the time to book your room for the next Intensive or RFS is now! Luther students will still receive a deeply discounted rate at the Fairfield Inn Roseville, however 2023 will bring an increase to $84/night. Rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis. Visit Inside Luther for more information.
As always, students are welcome to coordinate accommodations that work the best for them. You can find a list here of additional hotels in the area.
We look forward to having you on campus!
Padgett to teach United Methodist History
Prof. Alan Padgett will be teaching United Methodist History next spring, and you can register now. This course meets the History 2 requirement for all MDiv students, and for United Methodist students it is required for ordination. It begins with an RFS in session 2, and continues with an extended online session that is asynchronous (i.e. no simultaneous work needed). It’s also guaranteed to involve laughter. Questions? Just write to him: apadgett@luthersem.edu
New Extended Hours
Beginning Monday, November 28, there are new, extended hours for OCC and Gullixson as part of an experimental use project. Use of the Gym and Library in these spaces will be tracked for purposes of the experiment.
OCC will now be open until 10 p.m. Monday–Friday.
Gullixson will be open Tuesday and Thursday until 10 p.m., and Sundays from 12–8 p.m.
This will not affect those with keycard access. Experimental hours are posted at the unlocked doors for each building and on our website. Doors for RFS and Intensives will unlock 30 minutes before the first scheduled class and close 15 minutes after the last class as a rule, unless there is a special event scheduled. If you have any questions, please reach out to Operations or Library services.
